Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program

eddieeagle.jpgThursday, July 9th at 3:30 PM, parents are encouraged to bring young children to a gun safety event at the Lake Placid Memorial Library. The Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program, which is offered by the National Rifle Association (NRA), will be facilitated by Kathy Sorenson, a local instructor who is also a retired teacher. Eddie Eagle himself is also rumored to be visiting. This event is part of the Highlands County Library System's Youth Summer Program. This program was developed in 1988. It's purpose, according to NRA literature, is "to promote gun accident prevention for children in pre-K through 3rd grade by teaching a simple safety message so they know what to do should they come upon an unsecured firearm: STOP! Don't Touch. Leave the Area. Tell an Adult." The program's materials are offered free of charge to the library system because of funding from the Friends of the NRA. Please call 699-3705 to reserve a seat as space restrictions permit only 30 children to attend.

Children's Library Program "Going to the Dogs"

rickymartin.jpgRick Martin and the Tricky Dogs Show, "a circus style comedy dog act," will be performed at the Sebring Civic Center for young citizens and those who feel young on Wednesday July 8th at 3:30 PM.  The show, which is part of the Highlands County Library System's Summer Youth Program is sponsored by the Sebring Friends of the Library and is free to the public.

Stars of the show include five terriers named Chico, Twinky, Lucy, Minnie and Ziggy; a poodle named Pee Wee; and their human Rick.

This entertaining 45-minute show is also very educational. There will be lessons on "Reading for Fun, Research at the Library, Fire Safety, Stranger Dangers, Bicycle Helmets, Setting Goals, and Practice and Perseverance."

Training dogs for tricks combining both entertainment and education is rewarding for the dogs, their trainers and audiences.  Everybody has fun and children in particular learn about serious subjects in a non-serious way.

The public is encouraged to attend this worthwhile show and bring lots and lots of children.

For more information contact Children's Librarian Michelle Skyers at 402-6716.

Proper Landscape Watering

Planting your personal view of scenery in your backyard without addressing different watering needs can be challenging at best and downright disappointing if done incorrectly. Make your life easier by learning just how to address the watering needs of your landscape.

Attend the second installment in Environmental Horticulturist Dee Dee Jacobson's summer plant cultivating series at Lake Placid Memorial Library. The seminar entitled "Water, Water Everywhere" will take place at 10:00 o'clock AM on Saturday, June 20th. Seating is limited. If you have questions or would like to make a reservation, call Kathleen Mills Montgomery at 699-3705.

Primal Connection to Perform

Highlands County's Youth Summer Program at the Lake Placid Memorial Library "kicks off" with a performance by the Primal Connection World Rhythm Percussion Ensemble on Thursday, June 18th.  The 3:30 PM event is sponsored by the Lake Placid Friends of the Library.

According the Primal Connection website, drumming helps to educate, heal, unite and lift the spirit. Besides that, participating in drumming or just listening to it is a lot of fun.  Parents and grandparents are therefore encouraged to "bring the kids" for an enjoyable afternoon.

Local Author Sarafino to offer Memoir Workshop

On Thursday, May 28th Lake Placid Memorial Library's Friends of the Library will host a free writing workshop offered by local author Sunny Serafino called How To Write Your Memoirs. The seminar takes place between 2:00 and 4:00 o'clock PM.

The writing of a memoir is a specialty that once learned can help the writer capture and save special moments that can become a legacy for family and friends. This is a rare opportunity to learn from someone as experienced as Serafino, who has written a number of books including her latest Second Chances.

Anyone interested in attending this informative presentation is asked to call Kathleen or Maria at 699-3705. Seating is limited.

First Performance of County Youth's String Orchestra

The Lake Placid Friends of the Library are pleased to announce their sponsorship of the first performance of the Highlands County Youth String Orchestra on Wednesday, May 27th at 4:30 PM.  The concert will take place at the Lake Placid Memorial Library.  Admission is free.

The musical group formed a few months ago and is the realization of a dream of its director and conductor Diane Osborne, a classically trained violinist who performs as a soloist and also teaches.  Osborne recently wrote about the orchestra,  "It has offered student musicians the chance to improve faster, be enthusiastic about learning their instruments, and perform together."

Osborne has two associates who are helping her bring this, her second youth orchestra, to reality. Peggy Essex-Klammer is a music teacher, performer and violist.  Debbie Mercer is also a music teacher and cellist. Both associates are performers with the Heartland Symphony.  It is a goal all of the instructors that these students will also play in the Heartland Symphony someday.

There are eleven students in the orchestra at the present time ranging in age from nine to eighteen. Osborne hopes to double the group by this time next year.  Eventually, woodwinds and perhaps brass will be added.  "In the meantime, I would like to add a soloist now and then, accompanied by the string orchestra, to give serious student musicians the opportunity to strive toward perfection in their solo performance."  Sponsorships from the community help to defray costs. Currently, practices are held at the Lake Placid Church of the Nazarene.

As stated before, the concert is free.  The Friends would appreciate knowing how many will attend. Please call the library at 699-3705 to reserve a seat.
