Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program

eddieeagle.jpgThursday, July 9th at 3:30 PM, parents are encouraged to bring young children to a gun safety event at the Lake Placid Memorial Library. The Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program, which is offered by the National Rifle Association (NRA), will be facilitated by Kathy Sorenson, a local instructor who is also a retired teacher. Eddie Eagle himself is also rumored to be visiting. This event is part of the Highlands County Library System's Youth Summer Program. This program was developed in 1988. It's purpose, according to NRA literature, is "to promote gun accident prevention for children in pre-K through 3rd grade by teaching a simple safety message so they know what to do should they come upon an unsecured firearm: STOP! Don't Touch. Leave the Area. Tell an Adult." The program's materials are offered free of charge to the library system because of funding from the Friends of the NRA. Please call 699-3705 to reserve a seat as space restrictions permit only 30 children to attend.

Children's Library Program "Going to the Dogs"

rickymartin.jpgRick Martin and the Tricky Dogs Show, "a circus style comedy dog act," will be performed at the Sebring Civic Center for young citizens and those who feel young on Wednesday July 8th at 3:30 PM.  The show, which is part of the Highlands County Library System's Summer Youth Program is sponsored by the Sebring Friends of the Library and is free to the public.

Stars of the show include five terriers named Chico, Twinky, Lucy, Minnie and Ziggy; a poodle named Pee Wee; and their human Rick.

This entertaining 45-minute show is also very educational. There will be lessons on "Reading for Fun, Research at the Library, Fire Safety, Stranger Dangers, Bicycle Helmets, Setting Goals, and Practice and Perseverance."

Training dogs for tricks combining both entertainment and education is rewarding for the dogs, their trainers and audiences.  Everybody has fun and children in particular learn about serious subjects in a non-serious way.

The public is encouraged to attend this worthwhile show and bring lots and lots of children.

For more information contact Children's Librarian Michelle Skyers at 402-6716.

According the Primal Connection website, drumming helps to educate, heal, unite and lift the spirit. Besides that, participating in drumming or just listening to it is a lot of fun.  Parents and grandparents are therefore encouraged to "bring the kids" for an enjoyable afternoon.
